National Forklift Safety Day

Every year on the second Tuesday in June, organizations across the United States recognize National Forklift Safety Day, an industry-wide initiative founded by the Industrial Truck Association (ITA) to promote safer workplaces through operator training, equipment inspections, and stronger safety cultures. The 2026 observance marks the 13th annual National Forklift Safety Day, bringing together industry leaders, manufacturers, safety professionals, and employers to reinforce one important message: forklift safety is everyone’s responsibility.

Forklifts are essential to operations in warehouses, manufacturing facilities, distribution centers, construction sites, and countless other workplaces. They help businesses move materials efficiently and keep productivity moving. Yet even the most advanced equipment depends on one critical factor: the people who operate and work around it.

As Brian Feehan, President of the Industrial Truck Association, recently stated, “the human element remains our most critical asset.” He emphasized that comprehensive operator education and proactive daily equipment checks remain the foundation of forklift safety, even as new technologies and automation continue to transform the material handling industry.

That message aligns closely with what we see every day at Risk Management Partners.

Safety Is More Than Compliance

Most employers understand the importance of complying with OSHA requirements, but truly effective forklift safety goes beyond meeting minimum standards. The safest organizations build a culture where employees are trained, hazards are identified before incidents occur, and safety is viewed as an operational value rather than a regulatory obligation.

National Forklift Safety Day serves as a reminder that preventing incidents is not about a single training session or annual safety meeting. It requires ongoing attention, regular reinforcement, and leadership commitment at every level of the organization.

When companies invest in safety training, routine equipment inspections, and employee engagement, they are investing in more than compliance. They are protecting their workforce, reducing operational disruptions, and creating a stronger, more productive workplace.

Training Makes the Difference

Many forklift-related incidents can be traced back to preventable factors such as inadequate training, poor hazard recognition, lack of communication between operators and pedestrians, or failure to identify equipment issues before operation.

Proper forklift safety training helps employees understand not only how to operate equipment safely, but also why safety procedures exist in the first place. Effective programs reinforce safe operating habits, increase awareness of workplace hazards, and help employees make better decisions in real-world situations.

As workplaces evolve and material handling technology advances, ongoing education remains one of the most effective tools for reducing risk. Industry leaders continue to emphasize that operator training and daily equipment inspections are among the most important steps organizations can take to prevent injuries and incidents.

Building Safer Workplaces Across the United States

At Risk Management Partners, we work with organizations throughout the United States to strengthen workplace safety programs and reduce risk. Whether supporting warehouse operations, manufacturing facilities, distribution centers, construction environments, or other industrial workplaces, our goal is simple: help employers create safer environments where employees can perform their jobs confidently and return home safely at the end of the day.

National Forklift Safety Day is a valuable reminder that safety is not a one-day initiative. It is an ongoing commitment that requires leadership, training, accountability, and continuous improvement.

As your organization recognizes National Forklift Safety Day, consider whether your forklift safety program is doing more than checking a compliance box. Are operators receiving effective training? Are inspections being completed consistently? Is safety embedded in your workplace culture?

The answers to those questions can make all the difference.
